Gifts for an HVAC apprentice
Trade school graduation, the first year in the field, the first year on call, a journeyman card. Four real milestones, and almost nothing made to mark any of them. This page maps each one to a single piece and tells you what the words on it mean, so you can pick without knowing the trade yourself.
What an apprentice actually notices
An apprentice spends four or five years being the person who does not know things yet, on a crew where knowing things is the entire currency. That makes him the most sensitive audience in the trade for a shirt that gets it wrong. A clip-art gauge with the needle pointing at a pressure that would mean the compressor is dead is not a neutral mistake to him — it is the same mistake he is being trained out of making.
Which is why the design matters more than the garment here. Every phrase on this site comes out of real commercial HVAC and refrigeration work and is read by the founder, a fourth-year pipefitter apprentice with field time, before it prints. Nothing is a keyword. If the reading on the garment were wrong, the gift would be worse than no gift.

Trade school · year one
500 MICRONS
Heavyweight tee, $34
Year one is mostly carrying, watching, and being told to pull a proper vacuum. A pump takes the air and moisture out of a system before refrigerant goes in, and 500 microns is the reading that says the system is actually dry — the number he is being graded on right now, and the one nobody lets him skip. It is the safest design to buy for someone this early, because the number is correct and being correct is the whole job.
If you are buying for a graduation, this is the one. It reads as belonging rather than as a joke about the work, which matters when he is the newest person on the crew.

Second to fourth year

By now he gets handed the customer's diagnosis before he walks in: it's low on refrigerant. Nine times out of ten the charge is fine and the air is not moving — a filter nobody changed since the building went up, a blower wheel packed solid, a damper someone closed and forgot. This is the correction he has made a few hundred times, printed on a shirt.
The one that gets a laugh in the shop. It says he knows the difference between the complaint and the fault, which is exactly the thing he is proud of at this stage.

On the rotation
NOTHING FAILS AT NOON

Getting put on the on-call rotation is a real promotion nobody throws a party for. Equipment does not break on a Tuesday morning with the parts house open — it breaks on the hottest Saturday of the year, at closing, in the rain. If he has left a family dinner with his phone in his hand, he already knows the line.

Journeyman · refrigeration

Walk-ins, racks and coolers, in January, with the door propped open. Same reading as the tee, on the layer he actually wears standing in a box at 34 degrees. Turning out as a journeyman or moving from comfort cooling to refrigeration are both real milestones, and neither one comes with anything to mark it.

Order two weeks out
Nothing is printed until it is ordered: 2 to 4 business days on the print floor, then 2 to 5 business days in transit, so 4 to 9 business days from order to doorstep. Graduations and journeyman ceremonies have a fixed date, so order at least two weeks ahead and there is no arithmetic to do. Holiday weeks run longer and we say so on the shipping page when they do.
Size, when you do not know it
Buy the size of a shirt he already wears and check it against the measurements on the fit guide — both garments are true to size and cut for a working build, not slim. If the size is wrong, tell us within 30 days of delivery and we print the size you meant and ship it free, once per order. He keeps the first one, so there is nothing to mail back.
Send it straight to him
Put his address on the order and it goes to him. The tracking email goes to the address you type on the order form, so use your own if you want the surprise to hold. Nothing in the box prices the gift.
